Distraction Osteogenesis

What is Distraction Osteogenesis?

Distraction osteogenesis is a revolutionary procedure that allows for the gradual growth of bone in the cranial and facial regions. It is particularly effective in cases where there is a deficiency in bone and soft tissue. This innovative technique involves surgically separating the bone into segments and then gradually separating the segments using a device known as a distractor. Over time, new bone forms in the gap, resulting in increased soft tissue and bone length or height.

Advantages of Distraction Osteogenesis:

  • Enhanced bone and soft tissue growth: Distraction osteogenesis stimulates the natural growth of new bone and soft tissue.
  • Predictable outcomes: The gradual nature of the procedure allows for controlled bone growth, ensuring predictable and reliable results.
  • Improved airway dynamics: as the bone and soft tissue anatomy of the face is changed, the upper airway volume can be increased and airway resistance is reduced.
  • Avoidance of permanent hardware: Since distraction osteogenesis utilizes normal bone and soft tissue physiology to improve cranial and facial anatomy, the need for hardware fixation of the newly repositioned bone is not typically required.
